PALO ALTO, Calif. — In the first Aggies' overtime match of the season, the No. 6 UC Davis men's water polo team edged No. 13 UC Irvine, 14-12, Friday night on Day One of the 2022 MPSF Invite at the Avery Aquatic Center.
"We had yet another tough game against a strong opponent tonight," head coach
Daniel Leyson said. "We will continue to work on our consistency throughout games and finishing games where we are ahead. We are excited to play USC tomorrow."
With the Aggies' first overtime win of the year, UC Davis improves to 4-1 at neutral sites and 7-2 overall on the season.
Senior attacker
Connor Norton scored a season-high four goals while junior utility
Ben Fleming added a hat trick to guide the Aggie offense.
The match started off slow with both defenses tightly guarding their respective cages. The Aggies held a 2-1 lead after eight minutes on goals by Norton and redshirt junior central defender
Aaron Voggenthaler.
The offense picked up in the second and third quarters with the Aggies bursting on the scene for four goals in each frame, extending their lead to 10-6.
The Aggies attempted to thwart UC Irvine's comeback, but a five-goal third period by the visiting Anteaters eventually leveled the game at 11-11.
In the first portion of overtime action, redshirt sophomore utility
Will Nomura and Norton picked up goals, giving the Aggies a 13-11 advantage while redshirt junior goalie
Aaron Wilson did not allow any goals in the three-minute stretch.
The Anteaters tried to answer once again late, however Wilson shut the door defensively, stopping four shots, while redshirt junior attacker
Max Stryker tacked on another goal, ultimately sealing a 14-12 victory for the Aggies.
The Aggies will face No. 5 USC for the second time this season tomorrow at 12 pm PT, followed by another match against an opponent to be determined.
