Davis, Calif. - UC Davis saw a school record six teams achieve perfect scores as the NCAA released its Academic Progress Rate report this week after a one-year hiatus.
The Aggies' men's golf, men's water polo, beach volleyball, women's cross country, women's golf, and swimming and diving teams each earned a perfect 1000. 17 of UC Davis' 23 teams measured scored above the Division 1 average of 984 and the department averaged 990 across those 23 teams. Just one Big West Conference team had more teams with perfect scores than UC Davis while the Aggies tied for the most in the Big Sky Conference, where UC Davis competes in football. UC Davis also had the second-most perfect scores in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, where it competes in swimming and diving.
UC Davis' six teams achieving perfect scores doubles its total from the last time the APR report was released in May 2020. UC Davis was first measured at the conclusion of the 2006-07 academic year.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for remaining eligible and 1 point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
APRs were not publicly announced last year and this spring, the Division 1 Board of Directors voted to suspend APR penalties for an additional year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Typically, teams that score below 930 would have to face penalties that encourage an emphasis and prioritization on academics.
The current APR scores reflect rates from the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.
The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success.
