BASEBALL
Despite taking over less than two months before the start of the season, new head coach
Tommy Nicholson and his staff showed that the Aggies have the foundation to be competitive in the Big West for years to come.
Playing with a smaller roster than most in the conference, the Aggies frequently came back late in games, scoring over 40 percent of their runs in the seventh inning or later.
After missing nearly two full seasons due to injuries, Jonah Henrickson returned to on-field action in 2022 and was the only Aggie to start all 41 games this season.
Though the final weekend of the season ended in a sweep at the hands of Long Beach State, there was no better example of the Aggies' resiliency than that three-game set. Reduced to a pitching staff of eight players, two of which also played the field during the series, the Aggies allowed just four runs and forced extra innings in the series opener. Nate Freeman and Daniel Carrion covered all 11 innings of that May 26 game with Carrion throwing a career-high four innings and allowing just one earned run. Down to just four available pitchers in the season finale, Carson Seeman, Andrew LaCour, Nathan Peng, and Kyler Arenado allowed just three earned runs.
UC Davis went on a seven-game stretch from Mar. 29 to Apr. 12 averaging nearly 11 runs per game, a span that included the team's first wins of the season in back-to-back fashion and an extra innings win over Pacific.
Freshman Mark Wolbert became the first Aggie since Tanner Murray in 2018 to be named the Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year and the first Aggie since Murray in 2019 to be named to the All-Big West First Team.
