LONG BEACH, Calif. – The UC Davis beach volleyball team downed No. 9 Hawai'i to open the Big West Challenge at Rosie's Dog Beach, Friday in a tournament hosted by Long Beach State. The Aggies finished the first day of action, 2-1.

On top of defeating Hawai'i, UC Davis blanked CSU Bakersfield, 5-0. The only loss on the day was to host No. 15 Long Beach, 4-1.

After falling to a 2-0 deficit against Hawai'i, UC Davis rallied to win the final three matches to secure the top-10 victory.

Tabitha Mitchell and Kylie Miller won in straight sets, 21-15, 21-14 at the No. 4 spot and then Megan Luly and Ashlee Goycoochea won at No. 2 in straight sets, 21-18, 21-19. The Aggies secured the victory when Mia Olen and Madelin Smith came back from a set down to defeat Sarah Penner and Ilihia Huddleston, 18-21, 21-15, 15-13.

After a setback to No. 15 Long Beach, the Aggies blanked CSU Bakersfield, 5-0.

UC Davis will play three more duals tomorrow, beginning with CSUN at 10:45 a.m.
