UC Davis' late rallies fall short to open series with UC Santa Barbara

Davis, Calif. - UC Davis (0-10, 0-4) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but it wasn't enough to complete a comeback against UC Santa Barbara in a 5-3 loss in Davis on Friday.

Trailing 5-0 entering the inning after the Gauchos scored three runs in the top half of the inning, Mark Wolbert and Jake Brandel led off with singles to put runners at the corners with one out. Raul Sandoval singled to score Wolbert and send Nick Iverson, running for Brandel, to third. J.D. Mico followed with a two-out single that scored Iverson and then Sandoval on a fielding error in right.

The Aggies got a lead off walk from Wolbert to start the ninth but went down in order as UC Santa Barbara escaped with the series opener.

Nate Freeman started and allowed just one run, a homer to right, through six innings before running into trouble in the seventh. With two outs and a runner on second, Freeman walked two straight batters before UCSB was able to cash in all three runs. Daniel Carrion pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

Mico upped his average to .333 with a 2-4 day while Nick Leehey, James Williams III, Nathan Peng, Jake Brandel, Wolbert and Sandoval each collected a hit.

The weekend series continues on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Dobbins Stadium.
