IRVINE, Calif. – A trio of Aggies racked up double-digit kills as the UC Davis women's volleyball team defeated UC Irvine in a four-set battle, 3-1, Saturday night at the Bren Events Center.
"This was a great road win for our team," head coach
Dan Conners said. "We got key contributions from all positions. The on-the-court leadership, camaraderie, and continuity really came together. It was a real team effort and we needed everybody contributing to get these last two wins on the road. Josie really stepped up and had a big match with 15 kills and six blocks, what a great night for her. UC Irvine is an excellent defensive team, I thought Casi did a great job distributing the ball throughout the match keeping things balanced and taking advantage of some offensive matchups."
With their third consecutive road victory, the Aggies improve to 6-8 in Big West play and 11-13 overall on the season.
Senior
Josephine Ough was a force to be reckoned up the middle as she compiled a team-best 15 kills – one shy of tying her season-high. Redshirt junior
Demari Webb and sophomore
Olivia Utterback followed with 11 kills each.
Defensively,
Shira Lahav recorded another double-digit dig performance with a team-leading 17 digs. Junior
Lana Radakovic led the Aggies' block party with seven total blocks, matching her season's best. Sophomore
Casi Newman collected 45 set assists.
The Aggies took the opening set following a back-and-forth exchange of points. The set would require more than the 25-point marker as Radakovic recorded a kill and a block with Utterback for the Aggies to claim the set, 26-24.
The Anteaters responded furiously with a dominant second set. Although the Aggies tried to make some noise late with a mix of bench players, UC Irvine stood their ground for the frame, winning by a score of 25-11.
In a pivotal battle during the third set, the Aggies started out on a 6-1 run and didn't look back, going on multiple runs to ultimately snatch the third set, 25-21.
The fourth set saw both teams joust to an 14-14 tie, exchanging kills and blocks along the way. The Aggies would then find some momentum and string together a series of successful sequences, which catapulted the Aggies to a 25-18 victory for the set and match point.
The Aggies hit .205 for the match compared to .191 for the Anteaters.
UC Davis returns home for a season-long four-game homestand, beginning with Cal Poly on Nov. 10 at 7 pm PT.
