DAVIS, Calif. — The Aggies fought hard against one of the top teams in The Big West, but ultimately fell to Cal Poly in a high-intense five-set battle (25-14, 18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 19-21) Thursday at University Credit Union Center.
"Nothing to hang our heads about," head coach
Dan Conners said. "We fought every point. We battled very hard. That's a good team over there. 21-19 in the fifth set. I can't express how we fought."
The Aggies drop to 6-9 in Big West play and 11-14 overall on the season. Cal Poly improves to 11-4 in Big West play.
Sophomore
Olivia Utterback led four Aggies with double-digit kills, tying a season-high 16 kills in the effort offensively. Utterback also earned her fifth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 12 digs.
Senior
Josephine Ough collected 13 kills, but also was a big presence at the net front, stuffing a team-high four total blocks.
In a game that saw both coaches strategically call their timeouts and challenges late in the contest, Cal Poly ultimately came out on top in the fifth set by a score of 21-19.
Before that, the Aggies held a 11-7 lead in the fifth, but the Mustangs answered with a 5-0 run to take a 12-11 lead. The set would go beyond the distance as the Aggies would have several chances to earn the match point, however Cal Poly would not go away easily and eventually strung together the final two points of the match.
The Aggies look to rebound as they host CSU Bakersfield Saturday at 7 pm PT.
