LA JOLLA, Calif. — The UC Davis women's volleyball team earned its first conference sweep of the season, taking down the UC San Diego Tritons in three straight sets, 3-0, Friday night at LionTree Arena.
"We came out with a level of aggression that really set the tone for us throughout the match," head coach
Dan Conners said. "All credit to Josie, Shira and Demari for leading the charge and putting a lot of pressure on UC San Diego. The rest of the crew just followed up with playing great defense. There wasn't a spot where I felt we were in trouble. I felt really good about the way we played tonight."
With their third road victory of the season, the Aggies improve to 5-8 in Big West play and 10-13 overall on the season.
The Aggies got contributions throughout their entire starting lineup, however, off the bench, redshirt junior
Demari Webb led the Aggies offense with a team-high 11 kills. Right behind Webb was sophomore
Olivia Utterback and senior
Josephine Ough with nine kills each.
Junior
Shira Lahav paced the defense on the night with 14 digs. Sophomore
Casi Newman collected 35 set assists.
A back-and-forth start in the opening set saw the Aggies and Tritons go evenly at 8-8. The middle-blocking duo of Radakovic and
Josephine Ough found their groove early, combining for seven kills in the first frame and guiding the Aggies on a 6-0 run, which, in turn, led to a 15-12 advantage for UC Davis. The Tritons would battle back to level the playing field at 22-22, but the Aggies would earn the next three points to grasp the opening set, 25-22.
The Aggies got off to a strong opening in the second set, slicing and dicing their way to a 10-4 advantage, forcing UC San Diego to take an early timeout. UC Davis continued to step on the gas, finding well-placed attacks from Webb and blocks from the front row through the middle of the frame to stay ahead 20-15. Following a UC San Diego timeout, the Aggies would remain in control and take set two by a score of 25-20.
For the third and final set, both teams traded kills to get out to a 6-6 start. The Aggies followed that up with a 6-1 run with a combination of long-range kills and middle-blocking stuffs, which compelled the Tritons to take their second timeout of the set. UC Davis would ultimately close out the game in dominant fashion, taking the third set and match, 25-12.
The Aggies hit .271 for the match compared to just .092 for the Tritons.
UC Davis has a quick turnaround as they face UC Irvine tomorrow at 5 pm PT.
