DAVIS, Calif. — Senior
Josephine Ough smashed a game-high 11 kills as the UC Davis women's volleyball team earned its first home sweep of the season, taking down CSU Bakersfield in straight sets (28-26, 25-17, 25-15) Saturday at University Credit Union Center.
"I thought we weren't consistent throughout the whole night, but we played together, and we did what we needed to do," head coach
Dan Conners said. "Our defense was really sharp. That was probably the difference. We also really picked up our serving after the first set."
With their first sweep at home and third sweep overall, the Aggies improved to 7-9 in Big West play and 12-14 overall on the season. The Roadrunners dropped to 4-12 in conference action.
Ough was a force to be reckoned with as she led the Aggies in kills (11) and total blocks (5) while hitting .526 on the afternoon with just one attack error.
The defense stood on their heads, allowing CSU Bakersfield to hit just .019 in the match. Junior
Shira Lahav paced UC Davis defensively with 18 digs for an average of six digs per set. Sophomore
Megan Lenn also racked up double-digit digs with 12 to go along with four kills.
Early jitters were the name of the game for the opening set as both teams looked to find their rhythms. It was a back-and-forth battle throughout most of the set which required the Aggies and Roadrunners to go past the 25-point marker. A bad set by CSU Bakersfield followed by a solo block from Ough pushed the Aggies to a set one victory by a score of 28-26.
Set two saw another back-and-forth start that extended all the way to a media timeout with a 15-14 Aggies lead. Neither team were up by more than three points until a 16-16 score. The Aggies would then go on to complete the second set eventually via a 7-0 run, which was capped by a service ace by sophomore
Olivia Utterback.
The floodgates opened in the third set as UC Davis raced out to a 6-1 lead. The Aggies continued to pile on the pressure with
Megan Lenn at the service line, setting up an 8-0 run and forcing the Roadrunners to take their timeouts early looking at a 14-5 deficit. Roadrunners tried to muscle a comeback, but the UC Davis defense held their ground in the end to secure a 25-15 set and match point.
The Aggies continue their homestand against UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 7 pm PT, following a women's basketball game that features the Aggies going toe-to-toe against Boise State.
