Aggies Take Down Gauchos in Five Set Classic

DAVIS, Calif, - The UC Davis volleyball team started its final homestand of the regular season as they took on UC Santa Barbara at the University Credit Union Center. The Aggies won 3-2 over the visiting Gauchos in a match that featured two sets that went extra serves including a all-time classic third set which went an additional 28 serves.
 
The Aggies earned their eighth win of their Big West Conference season improving their record to 13-14 overall. The Gauchos dropped to 18-9 overall and 14-3 in Big West Conference play.
 
The Aggies had four players with double digit kills, led by Olivia Utterback's match-high 25. Demari Webb had 18, Josephine Ough had 15 and Megan Lenn had 11. Casi Newman had a match-high 61 assists
 
Defensively, Shira Lahav led all Aggies with a match-high 21 digs. Utterback had 14, Megan Lenn had 13, Newman had 12 and Julia Ng 10 digs respectively.
 
After the Aggies jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set, the Gauchos fought their way back into the set, tying the set at 24-24. The Aggies would fight off several set points by the Gauchos to win the first set 28-26.
 
The Gauchos would get their offense going in the second set. The Gauchos would gain the lead, in the set, at 12-11, and would win the second set 25-22.
 
The third set would be one for the ages. The two teams combined for 22 ties and 10 lead changes in the set. Each team fought for 29 consecutive set points. The Aggies would take the lead for good at 39-38 on an Utterback kill and would finish the set after an attack error by the Gauchos to win the third set 40-38.
 
In the fourth set, the two teams would battle back and forth yet again. The Gauchos would gain the upper hand as they took the lead for good at 17-16 and would win the fourth set 25-22.
 
In the fifth set, the Aggies would start the set on an 8-3 run, capped by an attack error by the Gauchos, and would win the fifth set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
 
The Aggies will play their final home match on Saturday at 3 pm against CSUN. The match will be Senior Night.
