Aggies Return to Winning Ways in Big Way; Race Past NAU, 56-27

DAVIS, Calif. – The UC Davis football team (2-4, 1-2) returned to the win column with its biggest offensive output of the season, downing Northern Arizona (2-5, 1-3), 56-27, on Homecoming Saturday from UC Davis Health Stadium.

The Aggies amassed 688 total yards, including 278 on the ground, to secure their first Big Sky Conference victory of the season. The 688 yards were the most since UC Davis set the school record of 768 total yards against Cal Poly in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

UC Davis averaged 7.3 yards per rush and was led by 150 yards on the ground by Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr. The senior eclipsed 4,000 career rushing yards, becoming the 12th player in Big Sky history to reach that rushing milestone.

Lan Larison scored on two of his first three carries, totaling 86 yards on just five rushes to average a mind-boggling 17.2 yards per carry. Larison also threw for a touchdown, finding quarterback Miles Hastings on a trick play.

Hastings threw for two touchdowns and 328 yards on 21-of-26 passing. The signal-caller found tight end Josh Gale and C.J. Hutton for scores. Hutton also added a rushing touchdown when he barreled in on a sweep from four yards out.

Gilliam, Jr. added 38 yards receiving on a team-high five receptions to amass 188 total yards. Justin Poerio led the Aggies with 82 yards receiving on four catches.

Defensively the Aggies played sound, holding the Lumberjacks to just six points until later in the third quarter. Kavir Bains and Nick Eaton paced the squad with seven total tackles and Rex Connors added his third interception of the season. Devon King broke the all-time unassisted tackles record with his two solo stops, moving his career total to 138.

UC Davis will hit the road to face Northern Colorado on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon PT at Nottingham Field in Greeley, Colo.
