NEWS & NOTABLES: Fresh off its first victory of the season, the UC Davis men's soccer team returns home for the first time since Sept. 2 this week, hosting Saint Mary's on Thursday (Sept. 16) to close out the non-conference portion of their 2021 schedule. Following a literal last-second defeat at San Diego State to start their roadtrip last weekend, the Aggies responded in a big way, scoring three goals in a shutout of San Diego on Sunday. Grant Fidler got the scoring started with a goal just before halftime for a 1-0 lead, while Ryan Dieter (his first career score) and Maximilian Arfsten (who added an assist on Dieter's goal) dented the back of the net four minutes apart in the second half for the final tallies. UC Davis out-shot the Toreros by an 11-7 count as the defense limited USD to just two shots in the second half — and none in the final 30 minutes of the contest — as Derrek Chan and Charles Janssen combined on the shutout. The Gaels, who face San Jose State on Monday (Sept. 13), enter Thursday's match against UC Davis with a 3-2 overall record, splitting with Dixie State (W, 2-0) and Grand Canyon (L, 1-0) last week. Saint Mary's and the Aggies have split the 12 all-time meetings dating back to 2004, each school winning five matches with a pair of draws thrown in.

NEWS & NOTABLES: The UC Davis women's soccer team is on a bit of a shutout streak, holding opponents to without a goal for the last 219:26 following a 1-0 shutout of Causeway rival Sacramento State in its only match last week. Freshman Genavieve Fontes produced the game-winner midway through the first half by heading home a perfect pass from teammate Risa Yamada for the only score of the match. It was Fontes' first career score, helping the Aggies win their second straight overall in improving to 4-3 on the year and their fourth straight in the series with the Hornets. The Gaels, who lead the all-time series with UC Davis by an 11-1-1 count, enter Thursday's contest with an unbeaten 5-0-2 overall record and is coming off a 2-0 shutout of CSU Bakersfield last week. Saint Mary's has not allowed a goal since a 1-1 draw at California on Aug. 29 and has surrendered only three goals all season, posting four shutouts.

NEWS & NOTABLES: The UC Davis women's volleyball team looks to right the ship following an 0-3 trip to Arizona this past weekend, hosting Pac-12 power California before traveling to take on Saint Mary's on back-to-back nights. The Aggies' trip to Flagstaff saw them fall to host Northern Arizona and Utah Valley on opening night in a pair of five-set heartbreakers, before falling to Arizona State in three to close out the tournament. Junior Josephine Ough was named to the all-tournament team — her second all-tournament team of the year after claiming similar honors at UC Davis' own Aggie Invitational — after averaging 2.50 kills and 1.50 blocks per set in decisions against the Wolverines and Sun Devils. Freshman Olivia Utterback averaged 2.31 kills per set, logging her second career double-digit kill performance with a career-high 15 at NAU and her first career double-double, adding 11 digs. The Golden Bears enter Thursday's match with a 6-3 record after going 1-2 at their own tournament over the weekend, and face Saint Mary's on Wednesday before taking on the Aggies. The Gaels, meanwhile, are 5-2 overall, downing CSU Bakersfield (3-1) before falling to Utah State (3-1) over the weekend.
