SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Sophomore
Maximilian Arfsten finished with a goal and an assist on the day, while teammates
Grant Fidler and
Ryan Dieter also dented the back of the net, leading the UC Davis men's soccer team to its first win of the year by a 3-0 score at the University of San Diego on Sunday afternoon.
Fidler got the scoring started with his second goal of the year in the 44th minute, staking the Aggies to a 1-0 lead at the break before Dieter and Arfsten scored four minutes apart in the second half allowing UC Davis to pull away. Fidler's score was his second of the year, tying teammate
Andy Velasquez for the team lead.
Arfsten, who led the team with three shot attempts and a pair on frame, tallied the assist on Dieter's first career goal in the 73rd minute, then had the favor returned to him when
Robert Mejia collected his team-best second assist of the year on Arfsten's goal in the 77th minute.
Overall, UC Davis out-shot San Diego by an 11-7 count, while the defense limited the Toreros to just two shots after the break and none in the final 30 minutes of the contest, successfully defending against seven corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper
Derrek Chan finished with a pair of saves in just under 79 minutes of work, combining with teammate
Charles Janssen on the shutout.
The three goals nearly matched the Aggies' entire season total from their previous five matches combined as they had scored only four goals as a team entering Sunday's contest, with three of those matches decided by a single goal — two of those by 1-0 scores.
Returning home for the first time since Sept. 2, UC Davis opens a three-match homestand to close out non-conference play on Thursday (Sept. 16) at 4 p.m., hosting Saint Mary's at Aggie Soccer Field.
