UC Davis blanks Gaels in home soccer action

Arfsten records first collegiate multi-goal game

DAVIS, Calif. -- Third-year midfielder Maximilian Arfsten scored two goals while senior forward Robert Mejia added a third, leading UC Davis to a 3-0 victory over Saint Mary's in non-conference collegiate men's soccer action at Aggie Soccer Field Thursday afternoon.

The Aggies win their second straight contest against a West Coast Conference school, improving to 2-5. The Gaels slip to 4-3 for the year.

Arfsten collected a pass from Grant Fidler then volleyed the ball into the right side of the frame in the 15th minute to put UC Davis to an early lead. Mejia scored his on a breakaway in the 69th, taking an up pass from a trailing Zachary Batchelder. Arfsten then drew a foul inside the SMC box, sending him to penalty mark. He converted the shot for his first collegiate brace.

Saint Mary's actually outshot its host by a 12-9 margin, including an 11-3 edge after the halftime break. Aggie goalkeeper Derrek Chan recorded five saves.

UC Davis returns to action against yet another WCC member, hosting San Francisco for a 4 p.m. match on Wednesday.
