Olivia Utterback finished with a team-high 15 kills and hit .393 in the opener, while teammate
Josephine Ough added 13 kills and hit .444 in the nightcap, but the UC Davis women's volleyball team was outlasted in a pair of five-set heartbreakers, falling to host Northern Arizona and Utah Valley by identical 3-2 scores on Friday night on day one of the Lumberjack Classic.
The Aggies jumped out quickly with wins in each of the opening sets, then staved off elimination with victories in the fourth to extend each contest. UC Davis fell, 20-25, 26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 15-10, in the tournament opener against the Lumberjacks, before the Wolverines upended the Aggies, 22-25, 25-15, 25-13, 23-25, 15-7.
Utterback's 15 kills in the opener marked a career high for the Plainfield, Ind., native, who surpassed her previous best of 13 kills to start the year against Causeway rival Sacramento State. Her .393 hitting percentage marked the fourth time this season that she has finished above .300 in that category, while her 11 digs against the Lumberjacks marked her first career double-double.
Ough's 13 kills against Utah Valley were a season high and marked the second double-digit kill performance of the year for the junior. She added eight total blocks against the Wolverines and committed only one error in 27 swings en route to her .444 hitting percentage.

Jane Seslar contributed a combined 48 assists in the two matches, 29 of those coming in the opener against NAU, while sophomore
Shira Lahav finished with dig totals of 22 and 17 against the Lumberjacks and Utah Valley, respectively. The 22 digs for Lahav were a season high, marked the ninth time in her career that she has scooped up at last 20 digs in a match, and were the most since a career-high 25 against Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 5, 2019.

Alexa Hogan and sophomore
Lana Radakovic added eight kills apiece and combined for 11 blocks against NAU, with the former hitting .500 in 12 swings.
UC Davis closes out tournament play on Saturday (Sept. 11) at 11 a.m. PT, taking on Arizona State in the tournament finale for both teams.
