NEWS & NOTABLES: Following an exhibition draw with Santa Clara and a 1-0 win in its final preseason tune-up against Chico State, the UC Davis men's soccer team opens the 2021 campaign for real this weekend on the road in the Pacific Northwest, kicking off the year against nationally ranked Washington on Thursday night, before taking on SeattleU in another match under the lights on Saturday. The Aggies and the No. 9-ranked Huskies meet for the first time since 2015 with UC Davis looking for its first-ever win in the series, while the Aggies put their five-match unbeaten streak (3-0-2) against ranked opponents on the line. The series between UC Davis and the Redhawks is tied, 3-3-1, with the last meeting also coming during the 2015 campaign in the "Evergreen State." Picked to defend its 2019 Big West Conference title, UC Davis stood atop the preseason coaches poll alongside perennial power UC Santa Barbara, receiving three first-place votes and 89 points overall, while four Aggies (
Maximilian Arfsten,
Max Glasser,
Jake Haupt, and
Andy Velasquez) were named to the coaches' preseason All-Big West squad. Both Haupt and Velasquez were All-Big West second team selections in 2019, Glasser was an honorable mention choice, and Arfsten was one of 11 players named to the league's all-freshman team.

NEWS & NOTABLES: Follow a home-and-home exhibition series with Bay Area rival California, the UC Davis field hockey team officially opens its 2021 campaign at home on Friday morning, welcoming No. 10-ranked Liberty to the Aggie field hockey facility for the season opener. The Aggies are coming off a 2019 season that saw them finish 8-9 overall, including back-to-back victories over Quinnipiac and Ball State to start the year and a three-game winning streak on the East Coast with triumphs over Central Michigan, American, and VCU. NEWS & NOTABLES: A split in the desert has the UC Davis women's soccer team coming home with a 1-1 overall record, set to host New Mexico State on Friday evening at the Aggie Soccer Field before welcoming UTEP to Northern California for a Sunday matinee kick-off. Friday marks the first-ever meeting with New Mexico State in the all-Aggie battle, while UC Davis takes on the Miners for only the second time in the history of the two schools — and the first since 2004. The Aggies opened the year with a shutout of New Mexico, 1-0, on
Leslie Fregoso's fifth career goal (thanks to a Sami Ruelas assist), while goalkeeper
Nicki Rucki and the rest of the defense limited the Lobos to just three shots on goal. Two days later, UC Davis found itself in a huge first-half hole before making the adjustments and scoring twice in the second half against host UNLV before falling, 3-2. Fregoso scored once again to get the Aggies on the board and Ruelas added her first career score off an assist by
Jayde Holley. UC Davis out-shot the Rebels, 23-16 for the match — including a 19-7 advantage during its second-half rally.
