DAVIS, Calif. – Colton Evans led UC Davis at the plate against Cal State Fullerton by finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI,
Kyler Arenado and
Spencer Gedestad each recorded a pair of hits and scored three times in Sunday's Big West Conference series finale at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.
Â
Aggie starter
Brett Erwin struckout a pair of Titans throughout his five-inning appearance and allowed three runs, as UC Davis scored twice in three of the first five innings to take a 6-3 lead midway through the game.
Â
Gedestad created his team's inaugural scoring opportunity of the day when he opened the bottom of the second with a triple to the corner in right. After Arenado joined him by drawing a walk, Evans drove in Gedestad on his ground out to short.
Â
Advancing to third on that play was Arenado, who touched the plate on the very next at bat when
Jackson O'Boy smacked a single to center.
Â
Even though the Titans (15-16, 8-4 BWC) took a 3-2 lead when it returned to the plate in the top of the third, UC Davis (10-24, 5-15 BWC) responded in its half of the fourth with another pair of runs to regain the lead.
Â
As was the case in the second inning, a leadoff hit by Gedestad — this time it was a single to center — and an Arenado walk started another Aggie scoring opportunity. After Gedestad scored on Evans' single to right, Arenado touched the plate on a grounder to short from
Jalen Smith.
Â
UC Davis' final runs were scored the following inning when Campagna and Evans drove in runs on another ground ball to short and a double to center, which allowed Gedestad and Arenado to score on those respective plays, to push the Aggies' lead to 6-3 through five innings.
Â
Cal State Fullerton scored once in the seventh, but it was a three-run eighth inning that ultimately led to a 7-6 Titan lead, which remained untouched for the rest of the afternoon.
Â
UC Davis will return to action on Friday night when it heads to Honolulu, Hawai'i, for its next Big West series. First pitch for that series opener is set for 9:35 p.m. PT.
