HONOLULU – UC Davis struck first in Friday's Big West Conference series opener in Honolulu when
Nick Iverson scored from second on a single to right field from
Cooper Morrison, which also allowed
Jalen Smith to place himself 90 feet from the plate on the same play.
Iverson opened the third inning with a leadoff walk, followed by a bunt single to first from Smith.
Following Morrison's at bat,
Jake Brandel's sacrifice fly to right allowed the Aggies to double their lead entering the bottom half of the frame.
After the Aggies hung two on the scoreboard, Hawai'i responded by scoring its first run of the game on a solo home run, which pulled the Rainbow Warriors within one.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, a pair of UH doubles, combined with a single — all hit with one out — and a sacrifice fly allowed the Rainbow Warriors to take a one-run lead of its own at 3-2.
In Hawai'i's half of the sixth, its lead ultimately grew to three when a leadoff double, followed by consecutive singles and another sacrifice fly two batters later, pushed another pair of Rainbow Warriors across the plate.
By scoring an insurance run in its half of the eighth, Hawai'i took the first game of the weekend series by a 6-2 score, improved to 17-14 overall and 9-2 against Big West teams. UC Davis will enter Saturday's 3 p.m. PT doubleheader with records of 10-25 and 5-16.
