SACRAMENTO, Calif. – When
Andras Necz put the finishing touches on his three-set singles victory at Campus Tennis Courts in Sacramento, California, UC Davis could finally celebrate its come-from-behind effort as Necz' matchup at No. 3 broke a tied score for good in a rivalry dual the Aggies won by a 4-3 score.
Including Friday's result in their final non-conference dual of 2021, the Aggies are 7-9 overall and will head to Southern California for its final pair of Big West Conference matches, at UC Riverside and UC Irvine on April 23 and 24, which will take place during the last week of the regular season.
Sacramento State, a team that played its first 13 consecutive matches on its home court, drops to 3-10.
Even though the Hornets won the doubles point, UC Davis responded by taking two of the first three singles points to tie the overall score at 2-2 with three Aggies still in action.
Chethan Swanson earned his team's first singles point by breezing past Rudolfs Aksenoks, 6-2 and 6-2, and was soon joined by
Arjith Jayaraman who earned a win of his own against Carlos Rodriguez by identical set scores.
Sacramento State responded by winning the next singles matchup, which pushed them one team point away from victory, but that was as close as it came to collecting its desired result because victories from
David Goulak and Necz helped the Aggies earn bragging rights for another year.
As was the case with Swanson and Jayaraman, Goulak recorded his result in straight-set fashion over Hermont Legaspi, 6-2 and 6-4, which set the stage for a winner-take-all situation on Necz' court.
After dropping the first set, 6-4, Necz roared back to comfortably win the next two sets, 6-0 and 6-1, and provide the perfect ending to UC Davis' only dual of the week.
