DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis junior
Kendall Seifert finished with eight points on the day thanks to four goals and four assists, while senior
Maddie Myers and sophomore
Alex Agnew each added hat tricks, leading the Aggies to a 19-10 victory over visiting San Diego State in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both teams on Sunday afternoon at UC Davis Health Stadium.
The win was the second over the Aztecs this season, improving UC Davis to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in MPSF play. After an upset of USC on Friday, San Diego State fell to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Making her first career start between the pipes, sophomore
Ashley Laing was stellar in helping to shut down the Aztec offense, finishing with a career high 12 saves just two days after making five stops in relief in a near comeback against Colorado.
Seifert tallied her fifth hat trick of the season and tied her career high with four goals originally set at Stanford back on Feb. 28. The four assists were also not only a career high, but her first four helpers of the season.
Myers' hat trick was her eighth of the year, matching teammate
Sorana Larson for the most on the team, while Agnew chipped in three assists to go with her fourth hat trick of the season.
Sorana Larson,
Natalie Wilson,
Kaley Stunz, and
Anna Hofgard, also finished with multiple goals, while
Mia Lawrence added her fourth of the season to kick-off the second half scoring.
Myers' first goal of the day broke a 2-2 tie at the 20:30 mark of the first and Wilson added her first of the day to build a two-goal lead. After the Aztecs clawed a goal back, Hofgard scored her first of the day to sparking a 5-0 run by UC Davis, extending the Aggies' lead to 9-3 with just over 11 minutes to play in the period.
Seifert scored twice, Larson scored her first, and Hofgard added her second during the run, as Wilson and Agnew tacked on their second goals later in the half to stake UC Davis to an 11-5 lead at the break.
The teams then went almost 10 minutes before finding the back of the net in the second half as Lawrence finally broke through for the Aggies with her fourth of the year. Her goal was followed by scores from Myers and Stunz for a 14-5 lead as UC Davis began to pull away. San Diego State, however, would get no closer than seven the rest of the way as the two teams traded goals over the final 16 minutes.
The Aggies peppered the Aztec goal to the tune of 42 shots on the day, putting 33 of those on goal, while the defense scooped up 18 ground balls — four of them on the stick of
Anna Belenis.
Ally Deremer and
Kate Graham finished with five draw controls apiece as UC Davis ended the day with a 17-14 advantage in that category.
Closing out a run of four straight at home, the Aggies hit the road for their next scheduled contest, taking on Oregon in Eugene on Saturday (April 17) at 1 p.m.
