KA'ANAPALI, Maui — Senior
Madison Wood fired an opening round 71, while teammates
Jackie Lucena and
Hannah Sun were close behind, holding down the top three spots on the leaderboard and pacing the UC Davis women's golf team to an 11-shot lead after round one of the ninth annual Anuenue Spring Break Classic at the Ka'anapali Golf Course on Monday in Hawai'i.
The Aggies finished 6-over for the day to lead both Portland State and host Hawai'i, which finished at 17-over, after the first 18 holes of play.
Madison Wood played to even-par on the front nine and had a bogey on 10 before carding birdies on the par-4 12th and 16th holes to finish at 1-under on the day. The score was one off her single-round season best of 70 set in the opening round of the Gunrock Invitational back on March 1.
She leads her teammate Lucena by a stroke after the sophomore carded an even-par 72 in Monday's first round. The Chico, Calif., native had an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole to offset a pair of bogeys on the front, then birdied the par-3 17th to finish her day.
Sun is two shots off
Madison Wood's lead thanks to a 1-over 73, posting birdies on the par-5 ninth and the 17th. Junior
Andrea Gomez Lloret is tied for 11th following an opening round 78, while
Skyler Wood wrapped up the scoring group in 16th.
Newcomers
