Noelle Wijnbelt scored four goals while
Alyssa Lengtat and
Allyson Clague each netted two goals with three steals, boosting No. 12 UC Davis to a 14-8 victory over No. 17t Pacific in non-conference women's water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies even their season record to 2-2. The Tigers open their 2021 at 0-1.
Julia Hartmann and
Grace Pelkey also chipped in another two goals while Wijnbelt and
Emily Aikema each had two assists. Starting goalkeeper
Sophia Noble totaled seven saves with four goals against in her first half of work, then
Nellie McAdams entered in relief with eight saves.
UC Davis jumped out to a 5-0 start and held a 10-1 lead with 1:36 left in the second quarter. Wijnbelt had three goals in that span while Noble stopped a pair of five-meter penalty shots to hold the Tiger offense in check. Pacific scored three straight in the final 78 seconds of the first half to cut the lead to 10-4 at halftime.
The Aggies maintained at least a four-goal lead for the second half, with Pacific's Ana Martinez do Amaral converting a 6-on-5 chance with 1:13 left in the third to bring the margin to 12-8. However, McAdams had six saves in the fourth quarter to shut down any further Tiger scoring.Â
UC Davis shot 14-for-24 (.583) overall and converted 7 of 12 power-play opportunities. Pacific went 8-for-31 (.258) in shooting, scored just five goals on 14 6-on-5 chances, and missed on both of its penalty shots.
The Aggies return to action on Friday for a home game against No. 16 San Jose State. Game time is 3 p.m.
