FRESNO, Calif.-- Sophomore utility
Julia Hartmann scored a career-high four goals while sophomore goalkeeper
Sophia Noble logged 11 saves to lead No. 12 UC Davis to a 10-7 win over No. 11 Fresno State in the nightcap of a collegiate women's water polo doubleheader at FSU Aquatic Center Saturday. The host Bulldogs claimed the opener by a final of 13-7.
UC Davis moves to 1-2 for the year, having played all three contests against Fresno State thus far in 2021.
Hartmann had the only goal by either team for the first seven minutes of play, as both the Aggies and Bulldogs locked into a 2-2 defensive battle in the first half. FSU took a 3-2 lead on a 6-on-5 conversion early in the third quarter, only to have Hartmann equalize on the next possession. The Bulldogs' Emily Nicholson then followed with the first of her two power-play goals to make it 4-3.Â
However, UC Davis exploded for a 5-1 run for the next seven minutes of play. Hartmann had two more scores in that stretch, while
Sam Vitt,
Tess Fundter and
Ryan Sund also contributed even-strength tallies.
Grace Pelkey extended the Aggie lead to 9-5 midway through the fourth. Noble had two saves while both Hartmann and Aikema recorded field blocks to quiet the FSU offense. Overall, the Bulldogs managed just 7-for-34 (.206) shooting, while the Aggies hit 10 of 23 (.435).
In Saturday's opener,
Allyson Clague scored two goals but UC Davis fell into a 5-1 hole by the 6:44 mark of the second quarter, then trailed 10-3 at the halftime break. The Bulldogs outshot their guests by a 28-16 margin, and converted half of their eight 6-on-5 opportunities. In contrast, the Aggies managed to score one power-play goal in 10 chances.
UC Davis returns home for a single game against Pacific at noon Sunday. Live video will be available via Big West TV while live stats will be found on The FOSH. Direct links for each are available at
