DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis enjoyed a strong outing from starter Brett Erwin against Washington State as he struck out four batters, allowed only two hits and one run in Friday's 2021 season opener.

He exited the game with two outs in the top of the fourth with the scored tied at 1-1; after Jalen Smith raced home from third on a wild pitch thrown by WSU starter Zane Mills in the first inning, the Cougars turned a leadoff double in the top of the third into their first run of the day.

Even though Preseason All-American Kyle Manzando gave his team a 5-2 lead after hitting a three-run home run in the fifth, the Aggies remained within striking distance until WSU pulled away late by scoring five runs in the ninth inning to record an 11-1 win.

UC Davis will return to Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium for Saturday's doubleheader, which will start at 11:30 a.m., with a 0-1 record. Washington State opens its season at 1-0.

Since they are unable to attend UC Davis home events this spring, video streams and live stats are available for Saturday's twinbill. Right-hander Jake Spillane and southpaw Zach Carrell are slated to start for the Aggies against right-handers Brandon White and Will Sierra, respectively.
