DAVIS, Calif. – Sophomore left-hander
Zach Carrell frustrated Washington State throughout the second game of Saturday's non-conference doubleheader at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium by throwing four innings of two-hit shutout baseball in his first start as an Aggie.
While Carrell was kept the Cougars on their heels, his teammates provided early run support when
Jackson O'Boy's double to the right field gap allowed
Jalen Smith to score the first run of the game. That advantage doubled in the Aggies' half of the third when
Michael Campagna, who reached base on a double of his own, raced to third on a wild pitch thrown by WSU starter Will Sierra and scored moments later on a passed ball.
UC Davis held onto that two-run lead until Washington State responded with a runs of its own in the sixth and seventh innings to pull even at two apiece entering the final innings of Saturday's doubleheader.
Following the Aggies's half of the seventh inning, umpires suspended action due to darkness and will resume this game Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Sunday's originally scheduled matchup will begin approximately 30 minutes after the first game concludes.
A video stream and live stats for Saturday's suspended game, and Sunday's series finale are available on BigWest.TV and UCDavisLiveStats.com.
In Saturday's opener, the Aggies scored five runs in the penultimate inning of a game scheduled for seven innings during a scoring rally that started with a bases-loaded walk drawn by O'Boy, and ended with a grand slam hit by
Kyler Arenado that cleared the fence in the left field corner
Those five runs more that offset the Cougars' early four-run first inning, but it was the top of the fourth when WSU scored seven runs and extended its early lead into a double-digit margin.
