Aggies celebrate seniors with sweep of Anteaters

UC Davis claims its fourth win in its last five

DAVIS, Calif. -- Freshman Amara Aimufua finished with a match-high 13 kills and helped UC Davis hit .312 on the night as a team as the Aggies celebrated their seniors with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-17) sweep of UC Irvine in Big West Conference play on Saturday night at the University Credit Union Center.

The win moved UC Davis to 10-15 overall and 6-8 in conference play, winning for the fourth time in its last five contests and the third by a sweep in that stretch. The Anteaters fell to 14-10 overall and 7-7 in league, led by 12 kills from Joy Umeh.

Aimufua finished hitting .440 for the night, with just two errors in 25 swings, adding an ace, a pair of blocks and five digs for a team-high 15 points. The performance was her 15th double-digit kill night of the year, and her sixth in the last eight matches.

Junior Josephine Ough had another strong night on both sides of the net, hitting .500 wihle finishing with eight kills in 16 attempts as well as seven blocks for 12 points. Freshman Olivia Utterback contributed 10 points on nine kills and a pair of blocks to go with nine digs, while sophomore Lana Radakovic hit .429 with seven kills and only one error in 14 attempts.

Defensively, Shira Lahav added 14 more digs to her total to go with an ace and five assists, helping stymie the Anteaters' offense to the tune of an .099 hitting percenter for the match. UC Irvine hit less than .100 in each of the first two sets, including an .061 clip in the opening game.

UC Davis opens a run of four straight matches on the road next week on the Central Coast as the Aggies take on Cal Poly on Friday (Nov. 12) at 7 p.m. UC Davis then closes out the weekend at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday (Nov. 13) at 4 p.m.
