SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Freshman opposite
Olivia Utterback finished with a career-high 17 kills, while junior
Josephine Ough added 11 blocks on Friday night, leading the UC Davis women's volleyball team in a hard-fought 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 28-26) defeat at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The Aggies had their brief two-match winning streak snapped with the loss, falling to 10-16 overall and 6-9 in Big West Conference play. The Mustangs improved to 12-14 overall and 10-5 in league play, led by 20 kills from Tommi Stockham, winning their 10th straight in the series.
The performance was Utterback's ninth double-digit kill performance of the season, surpassing her previous high of 15 kills set against Northern Arizona (Sept. 10) and matched against UC San Diego on Nov. 4.
Meanwhile, Ough's 11 blocks marked her third match with 10-or-more this season, joining her 12 blocks against UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 16 and 11 against Sacramento State on Aug. 27.
Defensively, sophomore
Shira Lahav collected a team-high 19 digs, while
Jane Seslar tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 16 assists and 12 digs.
After falling in the opening set, the Aggies rallied for a 25-21 win in the second, claiming only their third set win in the last 10 meetings with Cal Poly. UC Davis led wire-to-wire in the set, leading by as many as nine before the Mustangs scored six straight to make a three-point game. The Aggies began to inch away, but Cal Poly was game, closing to within two before an error and a block by Ough and
Demari Webb clinched the win.
The Mustangs took the third set, 25-19, and UC Davis did its best to stave off elimination, rallying from down six at one point to tie the set at 16 apiece. Another error and a block by Webb and Ough gave the Aggies their first lead of the set. A 4-0 run, capped by an ace from
Perri Starkey, staked UC Davis to a three-point, 22-19, lead, but Cal Poly mounted a comeback, tying things up at 23-all and taking a one-point lead after scoring five of the next six points.
A kill by Utterback and a block by Utterback and
Lana Radakovic gave the Aggies set point, but the Mustangs turned the tables with the next two to gain set point of their own. Another kill by Utterback tied the game once again, but back-to-back kills by Amy Hiatt and Stockham clinched the match for Cal Poly.
UC Davis closes out its trip on Saturday (Nov. 13) at 4 p.m., taking on CSU Bakersfield.
