POCATELLO, Idaho - Ulonzo Gilliam Jr. became the third member of the 3,000 yard club in UC Davis history on Saturday afternoon but the Aggies fell 27-17 to Idaho State for their first loss of the 2021 season.
With a 14-yard rush in the first quarter, Gilliam Jr. joined Preston Jackson and G.P. Muhammad as the only Aggies in school history to rush for 3,000 yards in their careers. Gilliam Jr. finished with 100 yards rushing on the afternoon giving him 3,056 career rushing yards.
Trailing 24-3 at the half, UC Davis battled all the way back to within 27-17 in the fourth quarter on a drive engineered by
Hunter Rodrigues.
Rodrigues rushed for 44 yards and went 3-5 with 31 yards through the air and capped the drive with a 17-yard scramble for a touchdown that gave the Aggies new life with 6:51 remaining in the game. Rodrigues also helped set the Aggies up at the end of the third quarter with a 64-yard completion to Kris Vaughn to set UC Davis up at the Idaho State four yard line on the final play of the third quarter.
Lan Larison took the ensuing handoff on the first play of the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 24-10.
The Aggies (5-1, 2-1) return home to host Northern Colorado on Oct. 16 in a contest that will also serve as Homecoming night for UC Davis.
