RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Junior
Logan Anderson and freshman
Hal Goulter each finished with four goals and an assist, and the Aggies shot just under 59 percent on the night, leading the No. 9 UC Davis men's water polo team to a 17-9 victory over No. 19 California Baptist in the team's Western Water Polo Association opener on Thursday night at the Lancer Aquatics Center in Riverside, Calif.
Following a week off, the Aggies showed little sign of rust, improving to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in league play while winning their eight consecutive league match and its 33rd in the last 34 WWPA outings.
The four goals for Anderson were a career high, surpassing the hat tricks scored against Navy and San Jose State earlier this year, while the five points matched a season high. Goulter, meanwhile, collected his third hat trick of the year and his highest goal total since scoring seven against Mount St. Mary's in the second match of the season.
Ben Fleming,
Aleix Aznar Beltran, and
Nir Gross, each added a pair of goals, while
Max Stryker,
Levi Murtaugh, and
Holden Neach, also dented the back of the cage. Goalkeeper
Aaron Wilson stopped 10 shots in net and swiped three steals defensively.
UC Davis jumped out to the early lead, scoring four of the first five goals of the match and led by a 6-3 count at halftime before opening the floodgates in the third. After the Lancers opened the second-half scoring, the Aggies scored in bunches, using a pair of 3-0 runs to outscore CBU by a 7-3 count in the period and build a 13-6 advantage heading into the final eight minutes.
The Lancers out-shot UC Davis by a narrow 30-29 margin, but the Aggies' defense limited California Baptist to just 30 percent shooting for the match.
UC Davis' Southern California trip concludes on Friday (Oct. 8) at 1:30 p.m., heading to Orange County to take on Concordia in Irvine, Calif.
