NEWS & NOTABLES: The Aggies split their attention between sites in Big West Conference play this week, playing host to UC Riverside on Wednesday at 3 p.m., before hitting the road to take on Cal State Fullerton in Orange County on Saturday. UC Davis' winning streak grew to five last week with a 1-0 road victory at UC San Diego to open league play with
Maximilian Arfsten recording his seventh goal of the year, but the run came to an end three days later as UC Santa Barbara won the match up of preseason conference favorites, 4-1, in Davis. Arfsten leads the team with 17 points, which stand as the most by an Aggie since Noah Wilson finished the 2016 campaign with the same number on seven goals and three assists.
Andy Velasquez added his third goal of the year against the Gauchos just four minutes into the match, while

UC Davis dropped a pair of four-set contests in Southern California last week, falling at UC Irvine and UC San Diego. Freshman

NEWS & NOTABLES: Sitting in a tie for second place in the Big West standings, the UC Davis women's soccer team enters the midway point of the conference schedule at 3-1 in league play, traveling to Southern California to take on Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside this week. After suffering their first league defeat of the 2021 campaign in overtime to UC Santa Barbara last week, the Aggies bounced back in a big way against previously unbeaten Cal Poly, shutting out the Mustangs 2-0 behind a pair of
Risa Yamada goals to move to 8-4 overall — leading the Big West in overall victories and standing just one point behind league-leader Long Beach State in the standings. Yamada's brace against Cal Poly was her second in her last three contests, giving her a team-high five goals and 13 points overall, which stand second on the team.
Leslie Fregoso tallied an assist on both of her teammate's scores, leading the team with six helpers and 14 points overall in 2021 — the most by an Aggie since Ashley Edwards had 16 in 2012 and the first time UC Davis has had two players with 10-or-more points in a single season since Edwards and Kiele Argente (11 points) did so that same year.
Emma Hasco also added an assist on Yamada's first goal, giving her three on the year. Senior goalkeeper
Nicki Rucki allowed just the one goal in nearly 187 combined minutes on the weekend, lowering her goals against average to 1.01 on the year and posting her fourth shutout of the year against Cal Poly.

Naomi Danner has been the Aggies' top finisher in each of the team's first two tournaments, ending the Badger Invitational in 32nd place before posting a tie for 60th at The Molly Collegiate Invitational. Freshman
Marina Mata, who finished in a tie for 33rd in Wisconsin, and classmate
Elle Rastvortseva, who finished in a tie for 59th at the Badger Invitational, have followed Danner in the standings in each of the first two events, with Danner and Mata each posting team-low rounds of 71 to start the year.

NEWS & NOTABLES: America East play continues with another East Coast trip for the Aggies, who take on Vermont and Maine this weekend as the second half of the year rolls on. UC Davis stands at 5-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play after a loss at Stanford in its only match last week as
Shea Gavin found the back of the cage against the Cardinal for her third goal of the year — which ranked tied for second on the team with
Lizzy Tedrow and trails only
Madison Theodore's five scores this season. It is the second-to-last road swing of the season for UC Davis, which returns home to host California and Stanford (the latter a non-conference contest) in back-to-back matches on Oct. 17 and 24, before heading to UAlbany and Monmouth to close out the regular season on Halloween weekend.

NEWS & NOTABLES: Standing a 5-0 on the year and ranked as high as No. 7 in the STATS Perform FCS national poll, the streaking UC Davis football team continues its battles with the "Gem State" this weekend, facing its second-straight opponent from the state of Idaho with a Saturday clash at Idaho State at Noon PDT. The Aggies, who are also ranked No. 8 in the nation according to the FCS Coaches Poll and are one of 11 remaining FCS unbeatens, are off to their best start since the 2004 squad also began the year with five straight victories and the program's best by any UC Davis team in the last 20 years. Thanks to 14 fourth-quarter points, the Aggies rallied for a 27-20 come-from-behind victory over Idaho at home last weekend, as redshirt freshman quarterback Trent Tompkins hit a wide-open Jared Harrell for the tying touchdown with 14:08 left in the fourth before Carson Crawford found McCallan Castles for the go-ahead score with eight minutes to go. The UC Davis defense -- which has yet to allow a fourth-quarter point this year -- took it from there, forcing a punt from just inside Aggie territory on the Vandals next drive, Erron Duncan coming up with a block on a 34-yard field goal attempt with 4:14 remaining, then Devon King picking off Idaho quarterback Mike Beaudry with 45 seconds to play that, effectively, ended the game. Junior running back Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr., who finished with 61 yards in the win over Idaho, needs just 44 more yards to join G.P. Muhammad (3,589 yards from 1995-98) and Preston Jackson (3,325 yards from 1991-93) as the only student-athletes to rush for 3,000 yards in a UC Davis career. With 2,956 career yards, Gilliam, Jr., enters the week ranked fourth on the all-time rushing list, just 12 yards back of Ron Austin (1977-80) for third.
