Aggies edged by Waves in sudden victory

Aznar Beltran and Voggenthaler score four goals apiece, Anderson adds three assists

DAVIS, Calif. -- Aleix Aznar Beltran and Aaron Voggenthaler scored four goals apiece, while Logan Anderson added a goal and three assists on the day to lead the No. 8 UC Davis men's water polo team, but No. 10 Pepperdine staved off elimination with tying goals at the end of regulation and overtime before striking for a 13-12 win in sudden victory on Friday at Schaal Aquatic Center.

In a battle between a pair of top-10 programs, the Aggies fell to 14-7 overall on the season, going to extra time for the fourth time this season -- three of those decided in sudden victory. The Waves improved to 14-9 overall with the win, getting a trio of scores from Sean Ferrari.

UC Davis held a 9-7 advantage after three quarters only to watch Pepperdine score twice in the final minute of the fourth -- including the tying score on a five-meter goal by Ferrari after the Aggie goalkeeper was whistled for a penalty with four seconds remaining.

Aznar Beltran and Voggenthaler each scored in the first overtime period -- the latter coming with three seconds left on the clock -- for an 11-10 advantage, and Voggenthaler opened the second OT with his fourth goal of the day for a two-goal lead. The Waves, however, answered as Anthony D'Ambra scored with 47 seconds remaining to make it a one-goal game, and Christian Hosea brought Pepperdine even once again as the extra attacker, burying a backhand with four seconds left to force sudden victory.

After winning the sprint, the Waves cracked the door open for the Aggies with a turnover, but Pepperdine forced UC Davis to cede possession with the shot clock winding down on the very next trip down the course. The Waves took advantage, getting the ball inside to Nicholas Fichman, who scored to the left side of the cage for the game-winner with 1:48 remaining.

Nir Gross added two more goals to the Aggies' total, while Michael Plastino also scored to finish the day, as UC Davis finished with a 37-36 shot advantage -- 10 of those from Aznar Beltran alone. Aaron Wilson finished with nine saves in 41 minutes, while John Claude Marco finished with 17 stops at the other end for Pepperdine.

The Aggies wrap-up Western Water Polo Association play at home next week with a pair of key matches at Schaal Aquatic Center. UC Davis welcomes Loyola Marymont on Thursday (Nov. 6) at 6 p.m., before taking on UC San Diego on Saturday (Nov. 6) at Noon.
