BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Senior
Grant Fidler tied the match midway through the first half with his fifth goal of the year, but CSU Bakersfield's Tom Shepard scored twice -- including the game-winner in the 104th minute -- to lift the host Roadrunners to a 2-1 double-overtime win over UC Davis on Wednesday night.
The loss dropped the Aggies to 7-8-1 overall and 3-3-1 in Big West Conference matches, playing into overtime for the second time in the last three matches and the third time overall this year. CSU Bakersfield improved to 5-8-1 overall and 4-3 in league play.
The first five shots of the match went the home team's way as the Roadrunners jumped out to the early lead with a goal in the 20th minute off the foot of Shepard, who converted passes from teammates Ricardo Soza and Carlos Armendariz for the 1-0 lead.
UC Davis then found a groove, finally denting the back of the net nine mnutes later on Fidler's score in the 29th minute as the Bakersfield native poked in a rebound off a
Maximilian Arfsten shot that was initially saved to tie things up at one apiece.
Fidler's fifth of the year is good for a tie for second on the team along with
Andy Velasquez, while Arfsten assisted on his sixth goal of the season -- the most by an Aggie since Adam Mickelson finished with six in 2019.
The Roadrunners then had a golden chance to take the lead in the 56th minute as UC Davis was whistled for a foul in the box, but Armendariz's attempt from the penalty spot was turned away by
Derrek Chan, who then stopped Armendariz a second time on the rebound to keep the match knotted at 1-1.
Following Fidler's goal, the two teams then went toe-to-toe for the next 75 minutes before Bakersfield was able to strike for the game-winner in the 104th minute as Shepard converted off Niklas Roessler's corner kick to end the match.
Fidler finished with a team-high four shots, putting a pair on frame, while Chan stopped five shots in net. Both teams were aggressive, combining for 31 fouls and seven total cards on the night.
The final road trip of the regular season concludes on the Central Coast on Sunday (Oct. 24) at 3 p.m. in San Luis Obispo, Calif., as UC Davis takes on Cal Poly.
