SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sean Bilter and
Grant Fidler each scored first-half goals to stake their team to a lead at halftime, but the Aggies could not hold off host Cal Poly in the second half as the Mustangs struck twice to post a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at Spanos Stadium.
The loss was the second straight for the Aggies, who fell to 7-9-1 overall and 3-4-1 in Big West Conference play. Cal Poly, now unbeaten in its last four, improved to 6-5-4 overall and 4-1-3 in league play.
Bilter's first goal of the season off assists by
Robert Mejia and
Andy Velasquez put UC Davis on the board first in the 14th minute, putting home a shot to the upper right side of the net for the 1-0 lead. The Mustangs got the goal back in the 26th minute off the foot of Emmanuel Perez, but the Aggies were able to strike just before the halftime horn as Fidler put home passes from Mejia and
Keegan Walwyn-Bent for the 2-1 lead.
The goal was Fidler's sixth of the season, ranking him second on the team after scoring for the second consecutive match, while Mejia logged his first career two-assist game.
However, that would be it in the scoring column for UC Davis as Cal Poly rallied for a pair in the second half. Perez netted his second of the match -- and his fourth of the year -- in the 57th minute to tie the match, and Drew Patterson's first goal of the season in the 64th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Mustangs scored on two of their three second-half shot attempts.
The Aggies had the final three shot attempts of the contest, but all three were denied by goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado, who finished with four stops on the day. UC Davis out-shot Cal Poly, 11-7, for the match with Fidler's three attempts leading the way.
The regular season comes to an end next weekend as the Aggies welcome Causeway rival Sacramento State to Aggie Soccer Field on Saturday (Oct. 30) at 3 p.m. UC Davis' senior class will be honored as part of "Senior Day" festivities prior to kickoff.
