Offense explodes in shutout of CSUN

Keegan Walwyn-Bent scores twice in rout of the Matadors

DAVIS, Calif. -- Freshman Keegan Walwyn-Bent scored twice six minutes apart while teammate Robert Mejia finished with a goal and an assist, helping lead the UC Davis men's soccer team to a 5-0 shutout of visiting CSUN on Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field.

The Aggies evened their record at 7-7-1 overall with the win and improved to 3-2-1 in Big West Conference play. Sunday's five goals were a season high and the most since UC Davis finished off a 5-0 victory at UC Santa Barbara nearly four years ago to the day on Oct. 21, 2017.

The Matadors fell to 2-12-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league play, limited to just four shots on the afternoon -- three of those coming in the first half.

Mejia opened the scoring just four minutes into the match off an assist by Maximilian Arfsten as the latter tossed a long throw in on the near side over the heads of the Matador defense, hitting Mejia in stride. The senior then outraced his own defender, who tripped during the footrace, and broke into the box, sending a low shot to the left side for the 1-0 lead.

It was Mejia's second goal of the year and the Aggies' fourth in the first five minutes of a match this season.

Connor Tipton then got in on the action in the 17th minute, netting his first of the year off a perfectly placed chip from Mejia, who sent a ball to the back left post that found the head of a wide-open Tipton for his first score of the season.

Walwyn-Bent then capped a huge first half with his first career goal right before the end of the half as Andy Velasquez fed the freshman at the top of the box, who unleashed a rocket that ricocheted off the right post, off the back of the CSUN goalkeeper, and into the right side for the 3-0 halftime advantage.

The Canadian's second goal of the match came just five minutes into the second half as Max Glasser's inital shot was saved by the keeper, but bounced right to Walwyn-Bent, who volleyed home the score to the left side for a 4-0 lead.

Freshman Zachary Batchelder then finished off the scoring with his first career goal in the 87th minute as Kameron Carey chipped a ball into the box from the left side that found the head of Batchelder, who caught the CSUN keeper flat-footed as he headed it back to the right for the 5-0 advantage.

The Matadors played the final 51 minutes of the match with only 10 men after drawing a red card in the 39th minute

UC Davis finished with a 15-4 shot advantage, putting 10 of its attempts on frame while holding CSUN to without a shot on goal.

The Aggies take their final roadtrip of the regular season with a pair away from home next week. UC Davis travels to CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday (Oct. 20) for a 7 p.m. kickoff, before heading to San Luis Obispo on Saturday (Oct. 24) to face Cal Poly at 3 p.m.
