DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis women's tennis clinched the doubles point and two of the first three singles matches off but were unable to put away the Matadors on Saturday, falling 3-4 at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
Winning on courts three and one, the Aggies dropped just three games between the two courts to dominate doubles play, winning their third consecutive doubles point, and fourth in Big West play. Lauren Ko and Sara Tsukamoto move to 7-4 in duals at No. 1, while the all-freshman duo of Kristina Evloeva and Yana Gurevich won at No. 3 to improve to 4-3. Ko/Tsukamoto now own 12 wins together on the year, twice as many as the next best Aggie pair.
In singles, Gurevich continued to roll, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Ana Fraile Toboso, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of the Aggies. CSUN earned a win at No. 3, but the Aggies responded with a win from Evloeva 6-2 in the third set for a 3-1 lead.
The lead did not last, however, as the Matadors won the remaining three matches off, with two going to a third set.
CSUN improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big West, while UC Davis falls to 4-8 on the year, and 1-4 in conference play.
Action continues at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on Sunday against UC Irvine at 10 AM.
