Ko clinches 5-2 victory over UC Irvine

DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis women's tennis picked up its second win in Big West Conference play, defeating UC Irvine 5-2 at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on Sunday.

The Aggies dominated in doubles once again, winning the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match, and the fifth time in six conference matches.

Lauren Ko and Sara Tsukamoto moved to 13 wins together, winning over UC Irvine's Flora Amiri and Arianna Tilbury at No. 1, while Yana Gurevich and Kristina Evloeva clinched the point with a win over Jessica Tsukiji and Jenna Schlatter at No. 3. Each duo dropped just two games each.

UC Davis kept the ball rolling in singles, winning the first two singles off for a 3-0 lead. Kristina Breisacher rebounded from a tough three-set match on Saturday to nearly double-bagel Amiri at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-1. Gurevich picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win to move to 4-0 this weekend in both singles and doubles.

The Anteaters claimed the match on court six, before Ko clinched the victory, saving four set points in the second to win 6-3, 7-5. With the team score at 4-1, the remaining two matches were played out, with Tsukamoto saving a set point in the first set tiebreak en route to the fifth Aggie point, 7-6(8), 6-2.

UC Davis will have one match next Saturday, playing San Francisco at the Olympic Club at 2 PM on Mar. 7, with a Tuesday matchup against South Dakota scheduled for 2 PM at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
