DAVIS, Calif. -- First baseman
Maddie Rojas, shortstop
Isabella Leon and third baseman
Leah Polson each posted two-run doubles while senior
Katie Kibby picked up her 17th career shutout in a 7-0 win against Utah State, then
Maddie Rojas and
Alyse Rojas had the only hits in a 6-2 loss against Texas State, as UC Davis split the second day of action at the Capital Classic softball tournament at La Rue Field Saturday.
UC Davis moves to 10-9 for the year.
Kibby surrendered just two hits with two walks in blanking Utah State in Saturday's opener. That marks her first shutout of the season and the 17th of her career, tying Justine Vela for the most by an Aggie in program's Division I era.
Polson's double drove in
Sommer Kisling and
Marisa Given in the second inning, then Leon and
Maddie Rojas broke loose for their two-baggers as part of a five-run UC Davis fifth. Given made it 7-0 when her single to left brought in the elder Rojas on the very next pitch.Â
In Saturday's nightcap, the majority of the action took place in the opening frame. Designated player Tara Oltmann and third baseman Sarah Vanderford each finished 4-for-4 for the game, with Vanderford's two-run double highlighting a five-run Bobcat first.
UC Davis got back two runs in its bottom half of the first. With two outs, Leon walked, then DP
Riley Siegel was hit by pitch.
Maddie Rojas singled in Leon but the throw at the plate scooted away from TXST catcher Caitlyn Rogers. Siegel took off on the errant ball and eluded a tag at home for the Aggies' second run.
However, Bobcat starter Dalilah Barrera only allowed one more Aggie hit the rest of the way. Freshman
Taylor Fitzgerald came in relief of starter
Taliyah Miles in the first and allowed just one earned run in her 6.2 innings of work.
UC Davis completes the Capital Classic on Sunday with games against Texas State (10:30 a.m.) and Saint Mary's (2 p.m.). A tournament central webpage is available at the link above.Â
