Aggies finish Capital Classic with five wins

Freshmen Brown and Fitzgerald earn victories in Sunday sweep

DAVIS, Calif. -- Freshman pitcher Kenedi Brown struck out 10 in her first collegiate complete-game victory, freshman Taylor Fitzgerald scored a relief win, and three seniors combined for nine runs scored in a nightcap win to highlight UC Davis action on the final day of its own Capital Classic softball tournament at La Rue Field Sunday. The Aggies avenged a Friday loss with a 4-2 victory over Texas State in their morning contest, then twice recovered from deficits in a 13-7 win over Saint Mary's in the afternoon.

UC Davis, which won five of six games during the Capital Classic, improves to 12-9 for the year.

Brown, a right-hander from Elk Grove, surrendered seven hits with just two runs, while fanning a career-best 10 batters in the win over Texas State. Fitzgerald, a lefty from Rocklin, entered in the fifth to help the Aggies escape a jam against the Gaels, then faced the minimum in the fifth and sixth en route to the victory.

Against Saint Mary's, center fielder Marissa Jauregui and Isabella each scored three runs and third baseman Alexis Villalobos touched home on two other occasions. UC Davis fell into an early 3-0 hole but clawed its way back to a 3-2 deficit before Jauregui, Leon and Maddie Rojas each drove in runs as part of a three-run fourth to give the Aggies a 5-3 lead. Leon drove in the go-ahead with her triple to the right-center gap, then came home on a Maddie Rojas rip through the middle.

That edge proved to be short-lived: a three-run homer from third baseman Julia McCormack put the Gaels ahead by a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth, then Jayda Alaan's RBI double made it a two-run lead later in that frame.

UC Davis answered immediately, starting with freshman Sarah Starks' solo blast to center. The Aggies capitalized on two SMC errors in tacking on another four runs, reclaiming the lead at 10-7. Jauregui and Maddie Rojas each plated teammates in that outburst. In the sixth, UC Davis loaded the bases with two outs, only to have yet another Gael error open the door for three more runs.

In all, Jauregui, Starks and Maddie Rojas each finished the nightcap with two RBIs.

In Sunday's early game, sophomore second baseman Sommer Kisling went 3-for-3, left-fielder Alyse Rojas hit 2-for-3, and Leon drove in two on a bases-loaded single in offensive support of Brown.

Texas State took the initial lead with two runs in the top of the third. Defensive player Tara Oltmann, who entered the game with six straight hits dating back to Saturday's nightcap, brought in leadoff hitter Bailee Carter for the second run. UC Davis answered in the bottom half with Leon's two-run single, which sparked the four-run third.

The Bobcats managed a runner in scoring position in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth frames, with Brown getting out of the inning with a strikeout in each. In the seventh, Texas State left fielder led off with a Kylie George hit. George navigated her way to third on a wild pitch and a fielder's choice but that was the closest Brown came to giving up another run in the final half of the game.

Brown's previous high for strikeouts was eight, coming in a complete-game loss to Utah State two weeks prior.

UC Davis returns to action for a Causeway Cup matchup against Sacramento State on Tuesday. First pitch is 2:30 p.m. at La Rue Field.
