DAVIS, Calif. — On the second day of UC Davis men's tennis' loaded homestand, the visiting Washington Huskies proved too strong for the Aggies in a 4-0 sweep at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The Aggies started strong in doubles play on court two, with Daniel Landa and Andrei Volgin winning their second match of the weekend. The duo dropped just one game all weekend.
UW claimed the match on court three, setting up the top court for a winner-take-all doubles contest. The pairing of Ivan Thamma and Chethan Swanson were up a break at 5-3, but the Huskies broke back to take a 6-5 lead. Playing clutch tennis, Thamma held serve to force a tiebreak, but the Aggies were unable to pull out the win, falling 7-2 in the breaker.
In singles play, the Aggies were again without David Goulak, forcing everyone up a spot in the lineup. Washington recorded the first three matches off court in straight sets to clinch the match 4-0. At the clinch, Dariush Jalali and Thamma were both entering a third set, while Volgin came back from 1-4 down in the first set to lead 7-5, 2-3.
UC Davis hits the road with a 6-4 record, heading to San Diego to face San Diego State on Friday, Feb. 28, and future Big West opponent UC San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 29.
