Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Tsukamoto leads Aggies at UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — With the match delayed due to rainy weather, UC Davis women's tennis dropped a 5-2 match at UC Santa Barbara, led by junior Sara Tsukamoto with wins in both singles and doubles over the Gauchos.

UC Davis got off to a great start, claiming the doubles point over UC Santa Barbara for the first time since 2014. Lauren Ko and Tsukamoto dominated on the top court, defeating Anastasia Goncharova and Dominika Paterova 6-2 to be the first off. The Aggies took care of business on court three, with the all-freshman duo of Kristina Evloeva and Yana Gurevich beating Juliana Valera and Elizaveta, 6-3. Shirley Hall and Kristina Breisacher were tied at 4-4 at the clinch.

The Aggies' advantage did not last, however, as UC Santa Barbara took a 3-1 lead with straight-set wins on courts No. 6, 3, and 4.

Tsukamoto recorded her second epic comeback of the year after falling behind 2-5 at the top of the lineup to Amit Lev-Ari, but stormed back to win 11 straight games and the match to keep the Aggies in the match.

With the final two matches in a third set, the result hung in the balance, as Breisacher faced Volodko, and Ko took on Goncharova. Breisacher claimed the second set 7-5 to force a third, but was unable to pull out the third set, being UC Santa Barbara's fourth point for the official win. After the clinch, Ko fell 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Goncharova.

The Aggies move to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the Big West, while the Gauchos improve to 4-5 overall, and 1-0 in conference play. UC Davis continues its road trip through the Central Coast with a 10 AM matchup against Cal Poly on Sunday.
