Aggies fall in battle with the ‘Bows

IRVINE, Calif. — Opening the first round of the 2020 Barbara Kalbus Tournament, No. 15 UC Davis fell 9-6 to No. 3 Hawai'i in a match not counting for Big West Conference standings. The Aggies continue in the tournament to face No. 13 San Jose State, meeting for the third time this season.

The 'Bows got off to a quick start, racing to a 3-0 lead off two five-meter penalty goals, and an even strength goal, all from Alba Bonamusa Boix, to complete her first hat trick at just 4:03 in the first period. The Aggies responded with a goal from Julia Hartmann to close the opening quarter of play, followed by two Aggie goals to tie the game at three-apiece at the start of the second. Noelle Wijnbelt and Alyssa Lengtat each converted a powerplay situation, before Hawai'i took a 5-3 lead at the half.

Wijnbelt narrowed the score to a one-goal game at 6:22 in the third quarter, but Hawai'i responded to extend its lead to 7-4, including another penalty shot. Lengtat posted her second multi-goal game of the season on another six-on-five play, and Wijnbelt completed her tenth hat trick of the year at 0:17 in the third, but Hawai'i held the Aggies scoreless in the fourth to snatch the win. Bonamusa Boix put up a double hat trick with the lone goal of the final period, with four of her six goals coming on five meter penalty attempts to keep the Rainbow Wahine undefeated at 10-0 this season.

Sophia Noble tallied nine saves on 25 shots, assisted by field blocks from Wijnbelt, Chloe Robinson, and Hartmann.

The Aggies will be in action for two games at the Corona Del Mar pool, starting Saturday morning with a 9:15 AM rematch against No. 13 San Jose State. The Spartans fell 8-6 to No. 5 Arizona State in their opening round game on Friday, led by Lili Urvari and Olga Descalzi Portell with two goals each. Live scoring will be available through FOSH.
