Aggies test mettle against Cardinal in opener

Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. — Opening the spring dual slate against one of the nation's top teams, the Aggies fell 0-4 to No. 12 Stanford on Friday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

UC Davis featured two returning doubles teams from the 2019 season in David Goulak and Ivan Thamma at No. 1, and Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson at No. 3, as well as bringing back Daniel Landa and Andrei Volgin at No. 2 — the duo finished the fall with a 5-1 record together.

The Cardinal started strong in doubles, taking the first point of the day with wins at the top two spots, while the match between Filip Kolasinksi/Sangeet Sridhar (Stanford) and Jalali/Swanson was left unfinished.

Continuing on to singles play, the momentum remained with the home team, as the Cardinal went on to win three of the six matches on to clinch the overall match.

Two Aggie freshmen earned their first career singles dual match start, with Volgin debuting at No. 4 singles, and Brett Brinkmann at No. 6. Brinkman highlighted the day against redshirt sophomore Kento Perera, and had just lost the first set in a tiebreaker when his match was abandoned at the clinch.

The Aggies will remain on the road, taking on Pacific next Friday, Jan. 17, at 1 PM in Stockton, Calif., before a third weekday match at USF on Thursday, Jan. 23 at noon.
