DAVIS, Calif. – Sophomore
Grant Fidler's situational awareness led to a penalty kick goal from senior midfielder
Dylan Wood in the 41st minute of Friday's home opener vs. CSU Bakersfield, redshirt freshman forward
Wumi Aladetimi enjoyed a home debut like no other by scoring the game-winning goal in the 47th minute as UC Davis improved to 2-0-1 on the season by defeating the Roadrunners, 2-1. Up next for the Aggies is Sunday's match versus #25 Air Force, their final home contest until league play begins in mid-October.
CSU Bakersfield will continue its season with a 0-3 record.
Fidler set up the Aggies' penalty kick opportunity by spinning around a CSUB defender alongside the end line, just outside the 18-yard box. An attempt to prevent Fidler from setting up a one-time scoring opportunity resulted in a tackle from behind, which quickly drew a whistle from the referee.
Moments later, Wood stepped up and nailed the penalty kick.
Even though the 'Runners equalized before halftime, it was Aladetimi who caught Bakersfield's defense, and goalkeeper off guard when he intercepted a goal kick 30 yards away from CSUB's net in the middle of the field.
The Toronto native then displayed his speed and agility by breaking through CSUB's backline, and singlehandedly set up a 2v1 play. Once Aladetimi forced the last Roadrunner defender to select a player to cover — spoiler alert, that player did not choose the redshirt freshman — he caught the opposing 'keeper backpedaling on the play and scored his first career goal as an Aggie.
