DAVIS, Calif. — With all Aggie pairs advancing through the opening round of doubles play on Friday morning, five men's tennis players have reached the main draw quarterfinals in their respective singles draws, and the whole team is set to be in action on Saturday.
Earning their first singles and doubles wins as Aggies, freshmen Brett Brinkman and Andrei Volgin finished the day undefeated, along with David Goulak, Ivan Thamma, and Dariush Jalali.
In doubles, Brinkman partnered with Daniel Landa in the men's top draw, and just edged Sacramento State's Hermont Legaspi and Michael Vizcarra, 8-6. Nationally-ranked Thamma and Goulak earned the draw's top seed — and a first round bye — and will be in action Saturday morning for their first match.
In the B draw, Jalali and Chethan Swanson made quick work of their opponents, defeating Fresno State's Bailey Gong and Daniel Baturyn 8-0, followed by Volgin and Arjith Jayaraman's 8-3 win over a duo from Portland.
Eight Aggies advanced through the first round of singles play, with the five undefeated players all winning two rounds.
Goulak (#6) and Thamma (#4) are the only UC Davis seeded players, and have advanced to the quarterfinals with two straight-set wins apiece to be the only Aggies remaining in the A draw main rounds. Notably, Landa upset seventh-seeded Tadiwa Chinamo (Pacific) 6-4, 6-4, before falling in three sets in the round of 16.
In the B draw, Jalali closed a three-set match with a dominant 6-2 third set, and continued to roll with a 6-1, 6-1 round of 16 victory. Brinkman needed three to get through his first round, upending Portland's Leo Hibi 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, while Volgin closed his match with a tiebreak win, defeating the Hornets' Anton De La Puente 6-1, 7-6(3). Both freshmen notched straight-set wins to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal. Freshman Mitchell Davis also made his UC Davis debut, competing in a mixed-team doubles, and two singles matches.
All four Aggie doubles teams will be in action at 8:30 AM with the semifinal rounds scheduled for 9:30 AM. There will be just one round of singles play on Saturday, starting at 11 AM. There will also be additional consolation matches by sign-up only on Saturday, which have yet to be determined.
