RENO, Nev. – Scoreless through halftime of Saturday's non-conference game at Mackay Stadium, senior forward
Janae Gonzalez connected on a penalty kick seven minutes into the second half to earn her first goal of the season, and that was all the offense UC Davis needed to record a 1-0 win at Nevada.
Women's soccer will return home for its next game, and enter Friday's 2 p.m. matchup versus Saint Mary's with a 5-3 record. With two non-conference games and an entire Big West slate of still to play, the Aggies are now two wins shy of matching their entire total from last season, and face an opportunity to match that total before its Big West opener in early October.
The Aggies' victory versus Nevada, who fell to 1-6 on the season with the loss, was their first since August, 2012, a result that was also earned in Reno.
Gonzalez' strike took place in the 52nd minute, which gave her team the lead for good. The Folsom native finished with a team-high four shots, and was one of five players who posted a shot on goal.
On the other half of the field, junior goalkeeper
Nicki Rucki ended her evening with five saves to record her first shutout victory as an Aggie. Rucki and her backline teammates, never allowed Nevada to generate an opportunity to score the equalizer, and played a key role in snapping the team's three-match losing streak against the Wolf Pack.
Following Friday's game at Aggie Soccer Field, women's soccer will head to San Francisco for next Sunday's (Sept. 29) 4 p.m. match — the final non-conference tune-up for UC Davis before it opens league play the following week at Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 3) and UC Irvine (Oct. 6).
