No. 11 Aggies upset No. 5 California in overtime battle

UC Davis scores twice in final 30 seconds of regulation to tie it, Kuesis with the game-winner in overtime

BERKELEY, Calif. — George Kuesis and Max Somple scored back-to-back goals in the final 30 seconds of regulation to tie the game at 12-all, and the No. 11-ranked UC Davis men's water polo team outscored No. 5 California, 4-1, in a pair of overtime periods en route to a 16-13 road upset of the Golden Bears on Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Center.

The Aggies improved to 3-2 overall with the victory, getting hat tricks from Keenan Anderson, George Kuesis, and Holden Tamblyn, with Anderson adding a pair of assists to finish off a five-point day. Junior goalkeeper Jonah Addington added 14 saves in goal to lead the defense, as Anderson added three steals.

Trailing by three at the break, UC Davis outscored California, 3-1, in the third to trail by a goal after three quarters, and was down 12-10 with 1:17 to play in regulation after the Aggies had battled back to tie the match at 10-10 thanks to goals by Jack Stafford and Tamblyn with just under three minutes to play.

A steal by Keenan Anderson with less than a minute to play led to a score by Kuesis to bring UC Davis back to within a goal at 12-11, and the Aggies' defense gave them another chance with 25 seconds to play as Tamblyn came up with a steal which led to a Stafford shot and a put-back by Somple to tied the match at 12 with nine seconds remaining.

Yurii Hanley then blocked a shot by Jasmin Kolasinac and the Aggies tried to win it at the death, but Tamblyn's attempt was denied by Cal goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg as the horn sounded, sending the game to overtime.

A miss on offense off the opening sprint went wide for UC Davis, but Addington came up huge at the other end of the tank, swiping a pair of steals to deny the Golden Bears any chance to take the lead.

Sophomore Nir Gross then put the Aggies ahead first off Addington's second steal, scoring his second goal of the day with 1:23 remaining in the first overtime, before Cal answered with a tying goal as Safak Simsek converted a 5-meter opportunity with 1:19 remaining to make it 13-all.

That set the stage for Kuesis as UC Davis drew an exclusion with six seconds remaining and the junior buried the go-ahead score with one seconds remaining for the 14-13 advantage.

Tamblyn added a power-play goal with 1:46 remaining in the second overtime and Keenan Anderson iced the victory with his third goal of the morning, scoring at even strength with 34 seconds to go for the final 16-13 score.

Saturday marked the only match of the week for the Aggies, who host the 2019 Aggie Roundup next weekend (Sept. 20-22) at Schaal Aquatics Center. UC Davis begins the tournament with its Western Water Polo Association opener against California Baptist on Friday at Noon, before hosting Stanford on Saturday at 2:15, and a rematch with California — as well as a contest against Ottawa University of Arizona — on Sunday in back-to-back contests beginning at 10:30 a.m.
