Aggies swept in doubleheader at Long Beach State

UC Davis clashes with the 49ers in the series finale on Sunday on ESPNU

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Junior Isabella Leon finished 3-for-5 with a run scored, while sophomore Alyse Rojas added a pair of hits on the day, but host Long Beach State rode its offense to a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon, taking both ends by the scores of 3-2 in the opener and 10-0 in five innings in the nightcap.

The Aggies have now lost five of their last six overall, falling to 36-13 overall and 10-7 in Big West Conference play heading into Sunday's televised finale at 2 p.m. on ESPNU. The 49ers evened their record at 23-23 overall with the two wins, moving into a tie with UC Davis in the league standings at 10-7.

Leon finished 2-for-3 in the opener and added a single in game two, collecting her 10th multi-hit game in the process. She joins teammates Alyse Rojas (13) and Marisa Given (12) with double-digit multi-hit games on the season.

Speaking of Alyse Rojas, a pair of singles on the day helped the sophomore extend her hitting streak to five straight games — the longest active streak by an Aggie hitter — and gave her 53 hits on the season, tying her for seventh on the school's single-season list and putting her just 10 hits back of Brianna Warner's record of 63 set in 2017.

UC Davis hung tough in the opener, keeping Long Beach State within striking distance and putting the tying run in scoring position in the seventh. Trailing 3-1 after Leon put the Aggies on the board in the sixth, scoring on Maddie Rojas' groundout, Alyse Rojas opened the rally with a one-out single to bring up pinch hitter Autumn Miller.

Miller quickly cashed in the run, driving a 1-1 pitch to the gap in right centerfield for a double, scoring Rojas all the way from first, closing the gap to 3-2.

49ers starter Kellie White (10-10) then shut the door, inducing a pair of pop-ups to end the game, stranding the eighth Aggie baserunner on the day — the fifth in scoring position.

Sophomore left-hander Brooke Yanez (23-6) suffered the loss, striking out seven and stranding eight runners of her own, including the bases loaded twice and two more runners at third.

In the nightcap, Long Beach State scored early and often against a pair of UC Davis pitchers, breaking the game open with a seven-run fourth inning, sending 12 hitters to the plate. Alyse Rojas, Leon, and Meghan Bradbury finished with singles for the Aggies, but the 49ers banged out 12 of their own en route to the win.
