Men’s tennis falls in Indian Wells to top-seeded UCSB

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — In the heat of the day, UC Davis put up a fight against the top-seeded and regular season champion UC Santa Barbara in the semifinal round of the Big West Championship. Although several courts were close, the Aggies fell 0-4 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Friday afternoon.

In 102 degree heat, the Aggies fought through the doubles, but dropped the opening point of the match. Featuring the original doubles lineup against the Gauchos, No. 70 David Goulak and Ivan Thamma suffered a rare loss at No. 1, and will await Thursday's Oracle/ITA National Rankings for NCAA selections. After courts one and two finished, Dariush Jalali and Chethan Swanson were 4-4 at the clinch.

In singles play, UC Davis was up against tough competition, as the Gauchos' top three players all hold national rankings. Goulak fell to No. 16 Nicolas Moreno de Alboran at No. 1 singles, while Swanson fell at No. 4.

The remaining four matches on were locked into battle, with Daniel Landa being the sole Aggie to claim a first set victory. However, Thamma fought back in the second set against No. 58 Joseph Guillin, taking it in a seven-point tiebreaker to even the match. Nil Giraldez, who earned his tenth dual match win yesterday against UC Riverside, had battled back to force a tiebreaker in the second set against No. 116 Victor Krustev. At No. 6, Arjith Jayaraman narrowly fell in the first set, 7-5, but was hanging tight in the second.

Unfortunately, Landa's lead was not to last, as his opponent stormed back for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory to clinch the 4-0 Gaucho win. At the clinch, Thamma was tied at 1-1 in the third set, Giraldez was fighting for the tiebreaker, and Jayaraman was battling at 4-apiece in the second.

The Aggies conclude their season with a 12-11 overall record, and have produced just the second nationally-ranked doubles team in the program's Division I history in Goulak and Thamma, who finished with an impressive 12-4 record at No. 1, and 21-5 overall.

Two Aggies hit double-digits in dual singles wins, led by Jayaraman with a 17-14 overall record. Goulak, Landa, and Swanson were close behind at 15, followed by Alex Scemanenco and Thamma at 11, and Giraldez at 10.
