DAVIS, Calif. — The Aggies had a strong start against No. 5 Hawaii, but the Rainbow Wahine pulled away in the end, ending No. 11 UC Davis' six-game win streak.
In Saturday's Big West opener, Emily Byrne notched her second consecutive hat trick of the season to lead the Aggies in a 9-13 loss. UC Davis falls to 12-9, while Hawaii improves to 12-2 on the year. Chloe Robinson and Noelle Wijnbelt each scored twice, with Annie Kutt and Allyson Clague both adding a goal.
Between Robinson and Kutt, the two were responsible for eight of the team's nine points, as they added two and three assists, respectively.
Robinson scored the first goal of the game to put the Aggies up 1-0, before the Aggies and the 'Bows traded points to end the first period tied at 2-2. In the biggest quarter for the Ags, Byrne notched her second goal to put the Aggies up 5-4 for their last lead of the game. Hawaii responded with two goals within a minute to take the lead once and for all.
Despite Wijnbelt's two goals in the fourth quarter, it wasn't enough to spearhead an Aggie comeback. Wijnbelt continues her scoring prowess, having made a goal in each game she's played this season to lead the Aggies with 40 total goals.
The Aggies enjoy a one-game weekend for the first time this season, as the tournament portion ended in Massachusetts last weekend, and will return home to host Harvard on Saturday at 11 AM at Schaal Aquatics Center.
