SEASIDE, Calif. —Freshman Hailey Williams came up big to lead the No. 11 Aggies in a dominant 18-9 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday. Williams put up a career-high four goals to complete her first career hat trick as an Aggie.
In the second meeting this season between the two programs, UC Davis bettered its previous 14-7 victory from Feb. 23, claiming a one-sided 18-9 victory in the Otters' own pool. The Aggies saw goals from 11 different players with Williams leading the charge. Prior to Wednesday's game, Williams had only scored two goals: one against No. 4 Cal, and one in the last meeting against CSUMB.
Three additional Aggies netted multiple goals, adding two each to the team score: Annie Kutt, Chloe Robinson, and Marcela Portales. Kutt is closing in on Noelle Wijnbelt (40 goals) as the leading scorer for the Aggies, as she now has 38 goals. Robinson's two has tied her with Kathleen Schafle for third on the team, as each has put up 28 this season. Portales remains a consistent point-maker for UC Davis, as she added an assist to put her at 31 points in her senior season.
Redshirt freshman Alyssa Lengtat netted her first career goal amidst an Aggie scoring streak, capitalizing on an exclusion to nail the powerplay for a 9-1 lead in the second period. Lengtat also tallied a team-high three assists, for her firsts as an Aggie, as well as two steals.
In a game that UC Davis controlled throughout, one of Cal State Monterey Bay's leading scorers Marisa Lovos tried to rally her team, scoring a career-high four goals, and adding two assists to have a hand in two-thirds of the Otters' points. Lovos netted back-to-back goals midway through the second period to kickstart the Otters, continuing to complete her hat trick in that quarter alone to bring CSUMB within five — the closest it would get.
All three of UC Davis' goal keepers saw action in the Otter Tank, led by freshman Sophia Noble, who racked up five saves throughout the second half and only allowed two goals against.
The Aggies return to Schaal Aquatics Center this Saturday, Mar. 30 to host Big West Conference foe No. 9 UC Santa Barbara at noon. Prior to the game, join UC Davis Athletics in a ribbon cutting ceremony to dedicate the new Schaal Team Center at 10 AM. Please RSVP here for refreshments and tours immediately following the dedication.
